Scan it well first

Nothing recovers detail the scan never captured, so the scan is worth getting right. 600 dpi is plenty for a print you intend to enhance, and it gives the model far more to work with than a phone snapshot of the same photograph.

Save the scan as PNG or maximum-quality JPEG. Scanning straight to a small compressed JPEG throws away detail before the enhancement has a chance to see it.

What this will and will not do

It removes grain and scanner noise, lifts soft edges, and reconstructs texture in hair, fabric and foliage. Faces keep their proportions and expressions, because the model is a general super-resolution network and not a face generator.

It does not colourise, repair tears or fill in missing areas, and it will not invent a face that has been reduced to a few pixels. Those are different problems, and a tool that quietly does them would be changing your photograph rather than restoring it.

Your image stays on your device

PhotoRise has no upload endpoint. The enhancement model is downloaded to your browser once and every pixel is processed in a worker inside this tab, so your image is never transmitted anywhere, never written to a server, and never seen by anyone. Close the tab and nothing remains.

Two numbers are counted so the project can show how much it is used: that a page was opened, and that an enhancement finished. Both are increments on a shared counter with no cookie, identifier or address attached, and nothing about your image is included. See exactly what is counted.

Questions

Will this change what people look like?

No. The model reconstructs texture and edges; it does not replace faces or generate features. Stronger modes are also blended back towards a faithful resample of your scan, which is the guard against over-processing.

Can it repair scratches, tears or stains?

No. Those need inpainting, which means painting in content that was never in the file. PhotoRise deliberately does not do that, so you can trust that what you get back is your photograph.

Are my family photos uploaded anywhere?

No. There is no upload endpoint at all. The model is downloaded to your browser and every pixel is processed in your own tab, so nothing is transmitted, stored or seen by anyone.
